Securing Funding for Business Growth

Hope your week is going great! I recently had the opportunity to speak with Helen Steele, a specialist in business funding and growth, on the Focus On podcast by Take One TV. The conversation was packed with valuable insights—especially for entrepreneurs aiming to grow their businesses but unsure where to begin with financing. We covered a range of topics, from how to secure grants to tackling complicated application processes, and highlighted the crucial role that human connection plays in winning funding. Let’s get into it.

Many business owners find the idea of securing financial support intimidating—and to be fair, a lot of the paperwork can be complex. Helen understands this firsthand. She offered practical advice, including the importance of showcasing your passion. Numbers matter, but what really stands out to funding bodies is your belief in your vision. They want to see that you’re invested, that you’ve done your homework, and that your product or service has the power to make a meaningful impact.

One particularly interesting point? The rise of video applications. Increasingly, grant providers are not only accepting but favoring video submissions. This format lets your personality and enthusiasm shine through—something that’s harder to convey in writing. It’s a powerful way to differentiate yourself when applying for funding.

Helen also clarified a common area of confusion: the difference between grants and bids. Bids tend to be rigid and structured, often requiring applicants to stick to a strict format. Grants, on the other hand, allow more creative freedom. They focus on your idea’s promise, innovation, and your role as the visionary behind it.

Helen’s strategy—which I completely agree with—is to lead with what makes your idea special. Explain how it breaks new ground and why it matters. It’s not enough to describe your concept—you need to communicate its potential to create real change. And don’t skip the research. Helen stresses that this goes beyond knowing your market—it’s about conducting a detailed competitor analysis to ensure your idea is truly original.
