Storytelling is a key element of successful adverts, indeed for all video or film communications. Telling a compelling story keeps people engaged, makes them want to watch till the end, and helps them to remember the brand for longer.

This year Amazon’s Christmas ‘Joy Ride’ offering is all about evoking cherished memories and emotions, such as the exhilaration of childhood winters in the snow, and the warmth of lifelong friendships. It reminds us of the ageless nature of happiness and friendship, but also reflects their brand promise of delivering happiness, just as the ladies are able to enjoy the sledge ride thanks to an Amazon delivery.

With limited time to grab people’s attention, the story needs to be clear, authentic and simple.

Consistent Brand Messaging

It’s important the ad is consistent with the brand message and what the brand is all about. Before working on any creative or ad ideas, whatever the season, consider the brand message.

If the brand is all about adventure and exploration, having people sat around a cosy fire doesn’t really fit and the story needs to be adapted to be relevant while keeping the message strong. For example, rather than sitting round a cosy fire, being outdoors playing in the snow would be a better fit for a fun, fitness and activity-based brand.

In conclusion, campaigns that evoke emotions and create meaningful narratives stand out by tapping into people’s emotions via a strong story that is consistent with the brand message.
