Various symbols can replace text.    is used for podcasts;  are used for Hollywood references. Using emoji’s can simplify your message and be a good visual signpost for viewers.

Before the emoji?

Emoticons were the precursors to modern emojis. Scott Fahlman, a computer scientist and Professor Emeritus at Carnegie Mellon University, posted an electronic message to a computer-science department bulletin board in 1982 suggesting the use of the emoticons :-) and :-( - the rest is history.

Apple and Emojis

Emojis have been around since 1999.   Japanese designer Shigetaka Kurita made the 1st emoji for cell phones, but they weren't popular with the masses until 2012 when Apple released iOS 6.  Just show the power of being aligned with the right platforms and brands.

Emoji Tracked

On the X platform you can use a tool called Emoji Tracker, to see how many people around the world are tweeting out emojis in real time.

It constantly updates use based on emoji information pulled from X.  You can see the number count beside each emoji increase right before your eyes. The change is so rapid, the website warns anyone with sensitivity to rapidly blinking lights to be cautious.

Emoji Usage

More than 3,300 emojis are currently in use across several platforms and devices per day, and that number is expected to grow.  An estimated 5 billion emojis are used every day on Facebook and Facebook Messenger alone. In addition, new emojis are being added all the time, and you can add Emoji keyboards to your Android device.
