Writing a script for video: a guide to a successful media day

Introduction
If you’re struggling with how and what to write when preparing a script, read on for some tips and tricks to help you. This blog covers wording and spacing and what content to include in your script.
Words
For video, you should allow a maximum of 3 words per second: ideally slightly less so that there is room for light and shade in your delivery. Avoid any technical jargon or too many statistics that could confuse your viewers. It is best to use words with one or two syllables where possible; essentially, keep it simple, straight forward and in a friendly conversational style to best connect with your audience. If we are aiming for a profile piece of about 30-40 seconds try to have approximately 160-170 words, though less is often better, and for any other durations you can use this to scale the number of words to the length of the video.
Content
The first thing you want is an introduction of yourself, then share with your viewers what you enjoy about what you do. Then, explain how this may benefit your clients. Remember, this is not a sales pitch, it’s a chance to share a positive outcome as a result of a working collaboration, or on a past project. Use the following three main points as an illustration
Who, Why, Result!
Think about what your ideal client may be looking for in terms of services you provide, and why they should contact you. What is their need, their concerns or their aspiration? Why do you think you may be the perfect fit for them? All things being equal, why would they choose you over your competitor? What is your value-added element? What difference does your judgement make?
The essence of a successful profile is for you to be yourself and not to overthink things too much. Be you, the person they will meet and work with; don’t overtly sell but inform and connect – the rest will come in time.
WHO - Usually your name and your title is put on the video for you, so your video introduction is just a brief ‘hello’ to give viewers time to engage with your personality. You may wish to include a very brief résumé, but do keep it simple, short and to the point.
WHY - This should be your main focus. Why you do what you do.
RESULT - Your professionalism and the benefits of your experience shared with your clients.

Conclusion
Overall, your script should be clear, friendly and concise, which will more easily reach and connect with your audience. The content should about you, about why you do what you do and how the clients will benefit from working with you and utilising your experience.
